500+ Years of History
Discover the rich heritage of a place where Timucan Indians, Spanish explorers, and pioneering settlers all left their mark on this remarkable island.
The first known inhabitants of Terra Ceia were the Timucan Indians, who lived quietly on the Western shore. Evidence of their existence remains in the shell mounds that still dot the area today.
Hernando DeSoto and his men arrived in 1539, establishing a camp at the Indian mounds where they rested for six weeks before venturing into North Florida.
Joseph and Julia Atzeroth arrived seeking a warm climate to improve Julia's health. They built a small cabin and claimed 160 acres under the Armed Occupation Act of 1842.
On May 2, 1901, the Terra Ceia Village Improvement Association (V.I.A.) became the first women's club established in Florida, dedicated to improving and beautifying the island.
Terra Ceia became renowned for celery and flowers. In 1908, asters grown on Terra Ceia decorated President William Howard Taft's inauguration.
Though physically cut in half by U.S. Highway 19 in the 1950s, Terra Ceia's residents have maintained the community pride and spirit of its early settlers.

Why Preservation Matters
Historic preservation is more than saving old buildings—it's about maintaining the tangible connections to our community's identity, values, and shared history. Each structure tells a story of the people who built, lived, and gathered there.
The TCI Preservation Foundation works to ensure that future generations can experience and learn from these landmarks, fostering a sense of place and continuity that only historic spaces can provide.
